Marine Steer-by-Wire

A large marine engine supplier makes steering systems that use Temposonics sensors for steer-by-wire control on large dual engine boats. Internal helical-to-linear hydraulic actuators are used to rotate the steering on a through-the-hull pod drive for large boats. These systems allow the boat to move in unexpected ways, such as sideways with virtually no forward or rearward motion simply by rotating on the boat’s center axis using a joy stick for control.

The rotary motions of the actuators are detected by the absolute, linear C-Series sensors in a novel rotary-to-linear translation.
Two sensors are installed in each actuator for the double redundancy needed for steer-by-wire.
